Scala (XLA): Development of the 5 year old Privacy Coin in 2023

cr1337.substack.com

Disclosure: As you might have seen on Twitter already, I have recently joined the Scala project as an advisor, a privacy coin that has been around for 5 years already.

What is Scala

Scala (XLA) is powered by the CryptoNote protocol, offering a secure and private way to store and transfer funds. It comes with special features, such as the possibility to mine it on mobile devices. This enables anyone to mine it, differently to Bitcoin for example, for which you have to invest a bigger sum of money in order to purchase ASIC miners.

Transactions done with Scala are untraceable and unlinkable. In recent years, privacy-oriented projects have not taken off yet, but I am sure this will change in the years to come. You can check out my more detailed thoughts on why 2023 will set the foundation for privacy and decentralization in this article.

Scala in 2023

In 2023 Scala will see a major network upgrade, called V8 Menger, which brings several improvements; mainly the security solution ‘Diardi’, Scala's rendition of a 51%-attack resistance utility. This solution will be part of the consensus mechanism of the V8. All details regarding the update can be checked here.

Another major change will be the introduction of BSC & ETH bridges, which will take place after the V8 Menger update. A gateway to Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and Ethereum (ETH) is much needed in order to anticipate the possibility to trade Scala (XLA) also on decentralized exchanges.

Also, the web wallet and payment gateway ‘Scallet’ will be updated (Scallet V3), coming with an improved interface. Then it will also be possible to integrate Scala for example in online shops, so vendors can offer XLA as a payment option.

Something that already happened this year is the integration of the domain support from Unstoppable Domains in the Scala apps. This way, users can use .crypto domains as XLA addresses, increasing the usability. Scala also received a minor development grant from UD for this purpose.
